Bin and recycling collections missed amid icy conditions in Somerset

SOME rubbish and recycling collections in Somerset have been disrupted today (January 6) as the cold weather continues.

As temperatures plummet across the county, crews have endured icy conditions on roads and underfoot, meaning they may not be able to reach everyone, according to Somerset Council.

“Crews need to take extra care in icy conditions,” a spokesperson said. “If the access road to where you live is icy, this may mean that they can’t reach you.

“Sometimes, parts of collection routes can’t be reached which can stop crews reaching you – even if conditions look okay to you locally.”

Anyone whose collections were missed on Monday or Tuesday are urged to leave their boxes out for collection later in the week.

It comes as kerbside pick-ups returned to normal after the festive period.

In North Somerset, crews are currently collecting recycling from properties who’s normal collection day is a Monday.

Six crews are finishing off collections from households who’s normal collection day was Friday, North Somerset Council said, and urged people with excess recycling to make sure it’s well sorted, with cardboard flattened down, extra glass in a recycling box and not in plastic bags, soft plastic wrapping bundled up, scrunched and tied off, with plastic and metal packaging in the red bag.

“If you have lots of recycling you could take some of it to the recycling centre or store it and put a little extra out next week,” a spokesperson said.

“Thank you for recycling and helping our crews collect in the cold and frosty conditions.”

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to fall once again overnight, with a yellow weather warning from the Met Office in place for ice covering Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
