Somerset school pupils learning about law through policing initiative

YOUNGSTERS at a Somerset school are learning about law as part of a special initiative starting this month.

Pupils at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, are gearing up to take part in the Mini Police Programme, which sees young people join forces with police in a bid to make a difference in their community.

Children from Years 4, 5, and 6 will work alongside PCSO Will Mortimer of Avon & Somerset Police to learn about law enforcement, community safety, and civic responsibility.

Police and schools said the programme is designed to help pupils build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and gain a strong sense of social justice, while encouraging a positive relationship with local policing.

Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict’s, said: “We’re delighted to take part in this innovative programme.

“Our pupils will gain more than just knowledge of community safety. They will learn to take initiative, show empathy, and believe in their ability to make a positive difference.

“I can’t wait to see them grow in confidence and take on new challenges.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added: “What a wonderful initiative. It helps pupils develop skills and confidence that make a real difference, not just within their school, but across the wider community.”
