A SOCIAL club that has been at the heart of a Somerset community for more than 125 years is appealing for help as it battles to stay open amid rising costs.
Committee members at the Perry Street Social Club, in Chard, have launched a Save Our Club fundraiser as it faces escalating tax bills and costs – despite the government announcing a £4.3 billion package for hospitality businesses, including lower tax rates it says will be the lowest in three decades.
Launching the Chard bid, a spokesperson said the club had been “a vital part of our community for over 125 years, providing a space for connection and support”.
They went on: “Unfortunately, it’s now facing financial challenges that could threaten its future.
“Your help can make a real difference. Please consider donating to ensure this cherished institution continues to serve us all for generations to come. Thank you.”

Festive revellers are now being urged to use the club for Christmas celebrations, with a number of events planned for the coming week.
And people can also donate to the appeal online via a Go Fund Me campaign.
The campaign, launched by Lee Wilson, said: “For over 125 years, Perry Street Social Club has stood as a cornerstone of our community — a place where generations have gathered, supported one another, and built lifelong friendships.
“Founded in the early 1890s, the club has weathered wars, cultural shifts, and countless challenges, always remaining a safe and welcoming space for local people.
“Today, however, this historic institution is facing one of its greatest threats: mounting VAT bills and outstanding debts that could force its doors to close for good.
“After reviewing the club’s financial position, we estimate that an investment of approximately £20,000 to £30,000 is required to stabilise operations, clear urgent liabilities, and secure the club’s future.
“We are launching this fundraiser to protect the legacy of Perry Street Social Club and ensure it continues to serve our community for the next century and beyond.
“Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to preserving this irreplaceable piece of our shared history.”
At the Budget last month, Chancellor Rachel Reeves (Lab, Leeds West and Pudsey) announced pubs and other hospitality venues would see relief from ‘rateable value’ calculations, dictating how much they pay in business rates, to cut costs.
The government also said a £4.3bn support package for pubs, restaurants, and cafes, alongside a freeze on duties for draught beer and an easing of rules over pavement drinks and events, aimed to support the industry.
“These measures show we’re backing hospitality not abandoning it,” a spokesperson added.
