Somerset darts pro Justin hood makes second round of PDC World Championships

GLASTONBURY’S Justin Hood averaged more than 100 on his way to the next round of the World Darts Championship at Ally Pally.

The 32-year-old, in his debut at the London tournament, beat Welshman Nick Kenny in the first round of the competition.

It means Justin, ranked 86 in the world, will now face the winner of the all Dutch clash between sixth-seed Danny Noppert and Jurjen van der Velde.

Speaking after his win, Justin, who lived in Street but has since moved to Weston-super-Mare, said: “I enjoyed it up there. It was tougher than it looked.

“I played well. I punished him when he was struggling a little bit. I’m happy with the performance.”

Having averaged more than 100 on the big stage, the Somerset slinger was optimistic – and tongue-in-cheek – about his scoring.

“It’s standard, I’ll have another 10 points on that next game – or 10 points less,” he quipped.

“My scoring has always been good, doubles let me down a bit. But if you don’t give them a chance, it doesn’t matter, just score heavy and have three or four darts at a double instead of one.”

While this is Justin’s first appearance at the Alexandra Palace event – shown live on Sky – he has been on the fringes of the PDC tour in recent years.

In 2019, he qualified for the World Masters, making the fourth round, and in June last year scooped his first PDC title and secured a tour card for 2025.

Now, he is looking forward to the next round.

“I’m very happy, very happy,” he added. “But I’ll be even happier when I beat Danny or Jurgen in the next game.

“I’ve played Danny three times, beat him twice. If it’s Danny, it’s Danny. If it’s Jurjen, it doesn’t bother me. If I play well, I can win.”

And if he should make it through on December 23, fans back home in Somerset and around the world can expect to catch a glimpse of his belly, as seen in his celebrations at Ally Pally…
