North Somerset care home officially taken over after closure fears

A FAMILY-OWNED firm has officially taken over at a North Somerset care home – saving it from closure.

Agincare has taken over Dewdown House Care Home, in Beach Road, Weston-super-Mare – saving it from closure, safeguarding residents and protecting around 40 jobs.

The company said the seafront home has been renamed Sedgemoor Care Home to mark a new beginning and recognise Agincare’s commitment to the area.

Agincare also promised “substantial investment for extensive refurbishment” at the property after a deal initially announced in October.

Registered manager, Anne Goodman, said: “I am very excited to be joining the Agincare family and leading the Sedgemoor team into its next chapter.

“Following a period of uncertainty for the home, I am incredibly grateful that we can continue to support our residents and provide high-quality care for many years to come.

“Over the past few weeks, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the operations team and am genuinely excited about what the future holds.”

With space for 40 residents, Sedgemoor Care Home will provide residential care, including specialist support for people living with dementia, and is ready to welcome new residents, Anne said.

Resident at the home, Robert Perkins, welcomed the new care home team and said: “It’s brilliant living here. The staff are so friendly, and we have a good laugh every day. Absolutely brilliant.”

Agincare chief executive, Raina Summerson, said: “Agincare is proud and excited to breathe new life into this wonderful home to ensure that it flourishes once more.

“With almost 40 years of experience delivering high-quality care in the community, we understand the concerns that can arise during times of change and can address these having successfully managed many transfers from local authorities, charities, and independent providers.”

Previously, Agincare has taken over the running of a number of under-threat Somerset care homes, including Sunnymeade Care Home in Chard and Critchill Court Care Home in Frome.

The firm was founded in 1986 from a single care home in Weymouth by Derek Luckhurst.
