Eight fire engines tackle blaze at West Somerset property

SMOKE from the loft space of a thatched property in West Somerset prompted a major callout for firefighters.

The incident, in Dulverton, was reported at just after 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon (October 28), with eight fire crews sent to the scene, alongside a water carrier, aerial ladder platform and an incident command unit.

Crews battled the fire for several hours before stating it was “coming to an end” at just before 8pm.

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Attending crews confirmed that this is a two-storey building measuring 16m x 4m of stone and brick construction with part thatched roof and part tiled roof.

“Fire was involving the electrics within the airing cupboard on the ground floor.”

They said six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, one 45mm attack jet, one 45mm safety jet, six thermal imaging cameras, two triple extension ladders, scene lighting and small tools were used to tackle the blaze.

Crews from Barnstaple, South Molton, Bampton, Honiton, Tiverton, Witheridge, Dulverton, Minehead and Williton were involved in the incident.
