Former Debenhams building in Taunton is up for sale: See inside – and how much

THE former Debenhams building in Taunton is for sale.

Boasting a 1930s Art Deco frontage, the vast former North Street department store stretches over four floors and is among the most prominent buildings in the county town.

Being marketed by Alder King, the Debenhams building has a guide price of £1.75 million.

“The property comprises a substantial and former department store, prominently positioned on North Street in the heart of Taunton,” the listing said.

“With its distinctive 1930s Art Deco frontage and expansive 1960s extension, the building offers versatile accommodation across multiple floors or scope for redevelopment (subject to necessary consents).

“Its wide street frontage, large display windows, and corner location provide excellent visibility and presence in one of the town’s busiest areas.”

The main building includes a retail and storage space, with a loading bay at ground level with vehicular access via North Street, it added.

“Ideally situated close to key amenities, transport links, and adjacent conservation areas, the site presents a rare opportunity for redevelopment,” the listing said.

“Whether for retail, leisure, residential, or mixed-use purposes, this landmark building offers scale, flexibility, and a prime location in Somerset’s county town.”

The store closed to shoppers in May, 2021, and plans were later unveiled to convert the site into apartments and retail space, but have since stalled.

I worked there in the early 80’s when I started out in my career in retail, great memories of the shop and the staff that worked there
