TRIBUTES have been paid to Bridgwater stalwart Julie Nicholson, who has passed away aged 90.
Julie, nee Quick, of Wembdon, was a staunch supporter of the Conservative party in the town – acting as agent for a number of MPs – as well as being active in a host of groups, including as chair of the Bridgwater Ladies Luncheon Club.
She also worked for the NSPCC and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Among those to pay tribute was current MP Sir Ashley Fox (Con, Bridgwater), who called her a “champion for Bridgwater”.
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Julie Nicholson on September 3, at age 90.
“Julie was a much-valued and respected member of our community who dedicated her life to serving others, both in her professional career and through her voluntary work.
“Julie’s contribution to Bridgwater and to the Conservative Party spanned decades. She worked alongside successive Members of Parliament for our town, beginning with Sir Gerald Wills in the 1950s and 60s, then Lord Tom King from 1970 until 2001, Ian Liddell-Grainger from 2001, and most recently myself.
“In every case, Julie was a steady, reliable presence – offering her knowledge, advice and support, and always championing Bridgwater’s interests.

“Her professional career as a Conservative Party Agent showed her deep commitment to public service.
“In later years she continued that service voluntarily, including as President of the Bridgwater & West Somerset Conservative Association.
“Beyond politics, she worked for the NSPCC and the Citizens Advice Bureau, both roles reflecting her desire to make life better for people in need.
“Many will also remember Julie as the founder and long-time chair of the Bridgwater Ladies Luncheon Club.
“For 65 years the Club has been part of the fabric of our town, raising funds, fostering friendships, and supporting our local Conservative Association.
“Julie’s leadership and enthusiasm were at the heart of its success.
“Julie never sought the spotlight, but she was always there behind the scenes – guiding, encouraging, and getting things done. Her wisdom, good humour and loyalty will be remembered with gratitude by all who had the privilege of working with her.
“On behalf of the people of Bridgwater, I want to thank Julie for her extraordinary commitment to our town. She gave so much, for so long, and left a lasting legacy. She will be greatly missed.”
A funeral service will take place at St George’s Parish Church, Wembdon, on Monday, October 7, from 2.30pm. Family flowers only, with donations in memory of Julie being accepted for Children’s Hospice South West.
