A POLICING initiative to combat shoplifting at a Yeovil supermarket has brought about a “clear decline” in incidents, police have said.
Over the past six months, Avon & Somerset Police PCSO Enzo has been working with staff at the Co-op in St Michael’s Avenue in a bid to tackle a rise in thefts and to improve confidence in the police.
And a police spokesperson said a number of moves have brought about positive results.
“Increased patrols and regular visits have helped deter several incidents, and Enzo has supported the collection of CCTV evidence and witness statements, leading to positive action against repeat offenders,” they said.

“Staff have been encouraged to report incidents, and a recent meeting with the store’s security manager focused on improving CCTV procedures.
“Our Designing Out Crime Officer also visited to offer expert advice on enhancing security.”
They said there had been a positive outcome to the increase in activity, and added: “While shoplifting hasn’t been eradicated, we’ve seen a clear decline in incidents compared to the previous six months.
“Staff have told us they feel more supported and confident in police response.
“We’re grateful to the Co-op team for their continued cooperation and look forward to building on the strong relationship PCSO Enzo has helped develop.”
