POLICE in Yeovil seized two e-scooters in the town centre on Wednesday (August 20) – as concerns over the vehicles continue.
Avon & Somerset Police said the scooters were taken off riders as they did not comply with rules in place regarding their use.
“We are aware of the increase in Anti-social behaviour being caused by users of e-scooters and we have had a number of reports of near misses with members of the public and people on e-scooters,” a spokesperson said.
“Just a reminder – e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
“This means the rules that apply to motor vehicles, also apply to e-scooters including the need to have a full valid licence and insurance.
“It’s not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters. This means it’s illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces, such as parks, street pavements, and shopping centres.
“If you use a privately-owned e-scooter in public, you risk the vehicle being seized under section 165 Road Traffic Act 1988 for having no insurance.
“Stay safe and ride responsibly.”
