Backstreet Buoys? Buoys II Men? Your chance to name Weston sea markers…

FROM Boaty McBoatface to Somerset’s gritter Spready Mercury – novelty names are all the rage – and now Weston-Super-Mare is getting in on the act.

Bosses at Weston Seafront are calling on creative members of the public to Name That Buoy.

The contest – which boasts only bragging rights as a prize – is calling on people to submit a name for a collection of four buoys which mark the safe swimming and paddling zone on Weston beach.

“Have you noticed the four Marker Buoys between Knightstone Island and The Grand Pier?,” a spokesperson said.

“They mark out a safe swimming and paddling zone for everyone to enjoy, and our Harbour Master has been working hard to keep them in top shape.

“The next step is registering them as a permanent fixture with Trinity House. But first, we need your help.

“We’re looking for the best name ideas for this collective of buoys.”

People are encouraged to “think funny”, “think clever”, and “think nautical fun” – with examples posted including the likes of BadBuoys4Life, BackstreetBuoys and BuoyWatch.

People can submit their suggestions on the Weston Seafront Facebook page, at facebook.com/westonseafront.
