Contraband – including makeshift weapons and a BONE – found in Somerset prison drain

A BONE and weapons were among gruesome discoveries when staff cleared an old drain at a Somerset prison.

The find was unearthed during work at Shepton Mallet Prison – the world’s oldest working prison.

A spokesperson said the bone was found alongside items such as makeshift weapons, sharpened toothbrushes, cigarette packets and more.

“The team at Shepton Mallet Prison has now initiated a formal investigation to identify whether the bone is of human or animal origins,” they said.

“Located above the original subterranean cells dating back centuries, this find reminds us just how many secrets Shepton Mallet still holds.”

Other contraband found during the clean included a razorblade and a BT Phonecard – which would have been used as currency among inmates.
