Busy Weston-super-Mare road to close twice this week

A BUSY road in Weston-super-Mare will close this week to allow a number of works to be carried out.

Two sections of the A370 will close – one on Wednesday and the other on Thursday – as North Somerset Council carries out survey and investigation work ahead of future maintenance schemes.

The closures – in force between 8pm and 6am – will also be used to complete essential maintenance works including tree cutting and litter picking, the council said.

On Wednesday (July 23), the A370 Herluin Way will be closed from the roundabout near McDonalds to the roundabout near Flowerdown Retail Park.

Traffic marshalls will be in place to help with access arrangements for residents affected by the closure, with diversion signs guiding drivers.

Then, on Thursday, the A370 Somerset Avenue will be closed between the roundabout with Flowerdown Retail Park and the West Wick roundabout near Morrisons.

Cllr Hannah Young, cabinet member with responsibility for roads, said: “To help us complete these works efficiently and safely, we kindly ask for your patience and co-operation throughout the scheme.

“We need to complete this essential survey work in order to prepare for future maintenance schemes on this extremely busy route.

“We appreciate that closing the road will be inconvenient but it is a necessary step in our ongoing commitment to improving North Somerset’s roads.”

Cllr Mike Bell, leader of the council, added: “I am delighted that we will be using the night closures to carry out litter picking too. I’ve been asking for this but it’s a difficult area to do this maintenance work safely. The night time closures provide the perfect opportunity.”
