‘Unofficial’ speed signs removed from Somerset town amid warning

UNOFFICIAL speed limit warnings have been removed from signposts in a Somerset town – as they may “make the legal speed limit unenforceable”.

Crewkerne Town Council said it has removed several of the signs from posts in the town, which were placed by unknown people.

“Several unofficial speed limit signs have recently been removed from around the town,” a council spokesperson said.

“These signs are not authorised and actually make the legal speed limit unenforceable.

“If any further signs of this nature appear, they will be removed.

“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

Unofficial signs are not legally enforceable, and could create confusion among drivers.

Government guidance on the installation of signs said: “Traffic signs in use on the highway must either be prescribed by TSRGD as amended, or be specially authorised by the national authority.

“Signs that are neither prescribed nor authorised are obstructions on the highway and must be removed.”
