THE majority of residents in Langport and Huish Episcopi SUPPORT merging the two parish areas, according to a consultation.
The review “aims to ensure that local councils reflect the identity and interests of their communities and provide effective and convenient governance for residents”, the council said.
It centres on a long-vaunted plan to combine Huish Episcopi Parish Council and Langport Town Council into a single council, covering the same area.
The first stage of consultation took place earlier this year – and the council said the “majority of responses supported the idea of merging the two councils”.
Now, Somerset Council is recommending creating a new parish council for Huish Episcopi and Langport, and dissolving the existing two councils.

Under the plan, the new council would have 11 councillors covering the whole area, not dividing the new parish into wards.
People are now being encouraged to have their say over the plan, with a deadline for submissions of August 8.
A final decision will be made by Somerset Council’s Constitution and Governance Committee in September, with changes expected to take effect from April 2027.

This is not a true statement because there is yet to be a public meeting and the results declared from the – Consultations on draft recommendations which closes 8th August 2025.
