E-bike seized by police as rider was not wearing a helmet

AN e-bike was seized after the rider was spotted riding around Yeovil without a helmet.

Eagle-eyed officers from Avon & Somerset Police’s Yeovil Response Team spotted the incident and tracked down the vehicle – a Sur-Ron e-bike.

“The bike was later located and was seized under S165 Road Traffic Act as the rider had no valid insurance and so the bike cannot be ridden in a public place or on a public highway,” a spokesperson said.

By law, for e-bikes to be used on public roads, the rider must be at least 14 years old. There are no prerequisites for licensing, insurance, or wearing a helmet for e-bikes, but others – that can be ridden without pedalling, are classified as motorcycles or mopeds under UK law and require appropriate licensing, registration, and insurance, while the user must wear a helmet.
