SPEED Indicator Devices (SIDs) are on the streets of Taunton in a bid to alert drivers and remind them to obey limits.
SIDs aim to promote ‘safer driving behaviour’ and ‘serve as a useful tool in conjunction with other measures to enhance road safety’, according to Taunton Town Council, which oversees three of the tools in the county town area.
It is also set to buy three more in the coming months.
Where can SIDs be located?
There are certain rules and guidelines which govern the location of a SID, the council said.
SID units should be placed:
- on a relatively straight stretch of road to allow the radar device to accurately judge the speed of approaching motor vehicles;
- where there is a suitable post at the location to affix it to:
- only at locations where the speed limit is 20, 30 or 40mph.
Where are SIDs in Taunton?
“A number of potential locations have been identified within the Taunton Town Council area,” a spokesperson said. “Their placement needs to be approved in advance by Somerset Council Highways team.
“SID units will be installed in a location for a few weeks before being moved on to another location.”
Devices are currently (until around May 26) installed at:
- South Road (outside 109)
- Stoke Road
- Trenchard Way
- College Way
- Wellington Road
- Kingston Road
