Scrub and hay bales destroyed in dramatic fire near M5 motorway

AN expanse of tree scrub and hay bales went up in flames near the M5 motorway on Friday morning (May 2).

Fire crews from Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Street, Cheddar and Somerton were sent to the scene, near Burnham, at just after 10.45am following a large number of calls from people who spotted the blaze.

It could be seen from near junction 23 of the M5, a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said, confirming the blaze involved 200m x 15m of scrub and bales.

“Crews used three hose reel jets, two attack jets, one light portable pump and wildfire pumping capability to extinguish the fire,” they added.
