MORE than 150 new homes are coming to Castle Cary.
Plans for 162 homes, including 35% of affordable properties, submitted by developer Persimmon Homes Severn Valley for a site off Station Road and Torbay Road, have been approved by Somerset Council.
As well as homes for sale on the general market, the scheme will also feature a mix of affordable rent and shared-ownership properties being delivered in partnership with a local housing association.
The development’s layout also includes a local equipped area for play, a public open space, and dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes to promote active travel across the site, Persimmon said.
“A focus on biodiversity will see the inclusion of new hedgerows, woodland planting, and sustainable drainage systems, while bird and bat boxes will be installed to support local wildlife,” a spokesperson went on.
“The development has been designed to integrate sensitively with the surrounding area and enhance the natural landscape.
“As part of a Section 106 agreement, Persimmon will also safeguard land for a future primary school, and make financial contributions towards education, as well as local recreation and leisure facilities.
“Two hectares of land are also being set aside for future employment use, supporting long-term job creation in the area.”

Claire Burton, managing director at Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: “We’re delighted with the committee’s unanimous decision, which reflects the collaborative effort and careful planning behind this scheme with Somerset Council.
“This development will not only provide much-needed new homes for local people but will also deliver wider benefits including new infrastructure to environmental enhancements and support for the local economy.
“We’re grateful to Somerset Council and members for their support and look forward to delivering a high-quality, sustainable development for the local community in Castle Cary.”

Great, another low quality Persimmon rat run spoiling what was once a lovely south Somerset town. Coupled with the development next to the station, this constitutes a huge uplift in the number of new builds coming to Cary where there’s no work, no infrastructure and nothing for kids to do. Glad I moved out. Council are both apathetic and pathetic, and won’t be satisfied till Cary is completely ruined….another Gillingham (Dorset) in the making.
Such a bad start Persimmon, cutting down an ancient hedgerow without permission during the nesting season! Start by planting a double hedge of large mixed hedging. Respect wildlife and the community.
And yet, despite their fair sounding words, the very first thing they did, prior to the grant of permission, was to rip out over 200 yards of mature hedgerow. Persimmon homes couldn’t care less about the local environment or the local people if they tried.
They should be made to build the school before the houses or it will never get built.
