A CENTURIES-old beech tree in Yeovil is set to be ‘reduced’ to an eco pole after being invaded by fungus.
The cycleway and footpath between B&M and Lysander Road, will be closed on Wednesday, April 23, to allow the “urgent” work to be carried out.
A Yeovil Country Park spokesperson said: “The Beech pictured has been deemed too unsafe to be left due to the proximity to the cycleway.
“The fungus in the picture has weakened the internal strength of the tree hence the urgent works.
“The tree will be reduced to an ‘eco pole/ monolith’. This will remain as a habitat for many invertebrates and birds for years to come.”
The cycleway will be closed from 8.30am, with a diversion in place.
“Please take the short diversion around the worksite, using the pavement next to Lysander Road and through B&M car park,” the spokesperson added. “The rangers will be there to assist.
“A replacement tree will be planted in due course.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused with the cycle way closure but these works are essential for your safety.”
