A CLOCK face has been removed from a Somerset church spire – amid an investigation into whether it might date back to the 1400s.
Experts undertaking restoration work on the timepiece at St Catherine’s Church, in Montacute, believe it may be 200 years older then originally thought – predating many known medieval clocks and making it one of the oldest in the country.
On March 20, villages watched on as work to remove it took place, involving 93-year-old Humphrey – a clock enthusiast who has maintained it for many years.
Pupils from All Saints Church School were also there to watch the work, and to get a closer look at the ageing clock face.
