Filming takes place at Shepton Mallet prison this week

SHEPTON Mallet Prison is closed to the public this week as it will once again open its doors to film crews.

The prison has been a popular filming location over the years, with scenes from Paddington 2, BBC drama Casualty and DES – the TV mini-series featuring David Tennant as serial killer Dennis Neilson – all shot at the prison.

A prison spokesperson said all tours and activities will resume at the prison from Friday, January 31.

“We’re sworn to secrecy, but can you believe our prison will be closed for nearly a week for filming?” a spokesperson said.

They added: “Any guesses about what’s being filmed? Could it be a sequel, or an entirely new production? Let the speculation begin!”

Somerset has often featured in film and TV.

The area has been used for a host of productions over the years, including Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Sanditon, The Killing Kind, and BBC’s 2006 adaptation of Dracula.

Cheddar Gorge was also reportedly recently used for Danny Boyle’s upcoming zombie film, 28 Years Later.

The newly-released Paramount + TV series, The Crow Girl, was shot on Brean Sands in April last year.
