Rescue teams scoured freezing waters in Burnham-on-Sea in search for young person

A RESCUE team braved freezing waters to help search for a young person in Burnham-on-Sea .

The Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team was called out to help search for a young person after they reportedly fell into Newton Lake on Wednesday, November 27.

The person was later located thanks to a multi-agency effort that saw a helicopter scanning the area with a thermal camera – having not fallen into the water.

“We quickly arrived on scene and after a fast briefing from the fire service command we deployed team members in full water rescue kit into the chilly water,” a Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson said.

“We were joined by members of BARB Search & Rescue – Burnham-on-Sea hovercraft and our flank team, Weston-Super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team.

“Each team deployed full search teams into the water overseen by a team leader on dry land.

“The situation was fast-moving due to the time-critical nature of the call, and the teams worked diligently and effectively in very cold conditions.

“Above the lake was the coastguard helicopter utilising FLIR thermal cameras.

“As the light faded, news came in that all persons were accounted for, and we were able to recover all teams from the water and stand down.

“This was a large multi-agency incident involving several teams across all 999 services and each team worked closely with the other.”

Anyone who has an emergency on the coast is asked to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
