Countdown to Bridgwater Christmas lights switch on begins

BRIDGWATER is getting ready to welcome in the festive season this month as residents are counting down to the big Christmas lights switch on.

The much-anticipated switch on is taking place on November 23 at 6pm, but the Cornhill, Fore Street and the High Street will be full of festive stalls and street food from 10am as part of the ‘Snowflakes and Shopping’ event.

The young, and young at heart, will also have the chance to meet Father Christmas himself.

The fun won’t stop once the lights are switched on however, as attendees will be treated to a squibbing display on Bridgwater Town Bridge at 6.30pm – a unique tradition that brings a taste of the famous Bridgwater Carnival to the Christmas celebrations.

Town mayor, councillor Jacqui Solomon, who will have the honour of switching on the lights said: “I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful tradition that brings our community together.

“The Snowflakes and Shopping event is a fantastic way to kick off the festive season, and I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

This festive celebration is organised by Bridgwater Town Council and the Bridgwater Town Team in partnership with the Bridgwater Food and Drink Festival.

The switch on will also mark the launch of the annual Bridgwater Town Team Christmas Shop Window competition, judged by cllr Solomon, which encourages businesses to get creative with their festive displays.

Windows should be ready for judging before December 13.

Cornhill and the High Street will be closed to traffic from 8am to 8pm on November 23 to ensure the day goes off without a hitch.
