YEOVIL-based helicopter maker Leonardo UK is the only firm moving forward in a government tender to produce new military transport, according to a Somerset MP.
Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) said he had contacted Maria Eagle (Labour, Liverpool Garston), Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, regarding the New Medium Helicopter (NMH) contract.
Following the discussions, he said the Minister confirmed the bid from Leonardo is the only submission moving forward in the evaluation process.
The Minister intends for it to move to the next stage of bid evaluation to ensure compliance against a minimum contract award criteria to ensure value for money, Mr Dance said.
Meanwhile, Ms Eagle said the Strategic Defence Review – looking into the future needs of the military – will not be used to delay proceedings, as had been the case under the previous government.
“This has been a long time coming, but I am delighted that the new government is moving in the right direction on this,” Mr Dance said.
“I am confident that Leonardo’s bid not only meets the necessary criteria but also offers significant value to both our defence industry and the wider community in Yeovil and beyond.”
The NMH procurement process will continue through 2025.
