Repeated vandalism sees Shepton Mallet public toilets close for at least three weeks

PUBLIC toilets in Shepton Mallet have been the target of vandals over the past week.

Shepton Mallet Town Council said as a result of the latest vandalism incident, the public conveniences on Commercial Road would be closed “for at least three weeks”.

The council released a statement last Friday (September 6) to announce that some units at the public toilets, including the disabled unit, were closed due to vandalism – with just one regular unit and a urinal remaining open for use.

However, an update today (September 9) announced further vandalism had occurred, with all units at the Commercial Road public toilets closed with immediate effect.

A Shepton Mallet Town Council spokesperson said: “This closure will remain in place until the end of September at the earliest.

“The repeated vandalism requires extraordinary cleaning and maintenance efforts. During this closure, we will work diligently to repair the toilets and explore measures to prevent future incidents.

“In the meantime, the public toilets in Collett Park will remain open from 7:30am to 4:15pm daily, including weekends.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”

Your Leveller contacted Shepton Mallet Town Council for an indication of how much the repairs will be as well as the specifics of the damage.
