THERE have been renewed calls for a post office in Wellington’s town centre – five years since it first closed.
Wellington has been without a post office since 2019 when the One Stop convenience store in the High Street, which housed it, closed.
Since then, the nearest facility has been at Rockwell Green.
The demand for a Post Office in the town was highlighted by Gideon Amos MP (Taunton and Wellington, Liberal Democrat) when he put down a motion in Parliament.
His Early Day Motion stated: “This House is concerned about the lack of any Post Office in Wellington, Somerset, with a population of 16,000 people many of whom lack access to a car and who rely on the town centre to meet their needs; it urges the Government to expand its Cash Access UK Banking Hubs to also provide Post Office services”.
The Post Office said it is yet to receive an applicant to take on a post office service in the town.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We want to restore Post Office services to Wellington. We would welcome a suitable applicant.
“Unfortunately, we have not received any applications for this vacancy.”

While Wellington currently has an banking hub operating in the town following the last bank closing its doors earlier this year, the hub does not offer postal services – despite being manned by Post Office staff.
Mr Amos highlighted the “missed opportunity” for the banking hub to also operate Post Office services.
Mr Amos said: “I’m delighted to have the support of fellow MPs for the return of a Post Office to Wellington.

“It’s important to highlight that a town the size of Wellington should have its own Post Office.
“The failure of the government-backed Banking Hub scheme to also provide Post Office services – even though some are run by the Post Office – is a major missed opportunity for communities up and down the country.”
The Post Office was contacted for comment.
