THE decision to name a property developer as the preferred party to buy the Saxonvale site in Frome has been defended as a decision made “in good faith” – and now ‘hopes’ to see the site regenerated.
At a meeting yesterday (Wednesday), Somerset Council’s Executive voted unanimously to name Acorn Property Group the preferred company to take on development of the 12-acre site.
At the meeting, held at Frome Town Hall, councillors heard from both Acorn and Mayday Saxonvale – a not-for-profit social enterprise – on their plans for the former industrial site, which has been derelict for years.
The six-hour meeting featured questions from public speakers and included input from other Somerset Councillors.
Consultants CBRE UK (Global Commercial Real Estate Services) were also present to provide expert, independent advice to council, and advised on matters of viability and deliverability.

After the decision was announced, Somerset Council said in reaching a decision, members “considered their legal obligations to seek ‘best consideration’ for all Somerset Council taxpayers”.
Leader, Cllr Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), said: “It was an incredibly difficult decision, but we agreed unanimously to proceed with Acorn Property Group as the preferred party.
“There was clearly an overwhelming desire for all concerned to see progress made at this brownfield site.

“After much consideration, and with considerable burden upon us, made a decision in good faith to proceed down a path which we hope will see the site developed.”
Leader of Frome Town Council, Cllr Steve Tanner, said: “We congratulate Acorn – they now have to deliver on the promises made for the sustainability of our town centre, providing homes, jobs, and leisure facilities fit for the future.

“We must take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and commitment that Mayday have put into their vision for this site – although disappointing now, their entrance into this arena has ensured a much better outcome for the town.”
Further due diligence will now be undertaken, Somerset Council said, while Cllr Revans made a public commitment to keep local members informed.
Acorn Property Group plans to develop the site into a “mixed-use, sustainable neighbourhood with contemporary, high-quality, living and work spaces including affordable housing and public areas”, the council said.
