Amusement arcade to be demolished and replaced – along with six holiday lets

AN amusement arcade in Brean is set to be demolished and replaced with a new building – as well as six holiday lets.

The current Carefree Amusements building, on the corner of South Road and Knoll Park, will be demolished under the plans, approved by Somerset Council and submitted by Salmon Planning Company on behalf of J Holland & Sons Ltd.

The site was previously a supermarket until it became an arcade in 1980, with extensions built in 1981 and 1982, as well as in 1991.

Now, it is intended for the entire development to be demolished and replaced with a new, two-storey structure, including a two-bed flat for residential use and six holiday lets to the first floor, above a replacement amusement arcade on the ground level.

“The proposed re-development would include a new parking area on the western part of the site which, in turn, means that the vehicular access would be relocated,” the application said.

“As part of these revised access arrangements a new section of footway would be created on the Knoll Park frontage.”

Jobs would be created during the construction project, the plan said, as well as at the redeveloped arcade and holiday lets.

“In the longer-term, the proposed development would create jobs and generate wider spending in the local economy,” the application added.

“Jobs would be sustained through the provision of the replacement amusement arcade, and new jobs would be created in relation to the holiday lets (including new administrative and marketing roles, alongside jobs for cleaning and maintenance staff).

“The new overnight tourist accommodation would also support the wider economy via tourist spending in shops, restaurants, and other attractions.”

Brean Parish Council objected to the proposals, on the grounds it would increase traffic in the area, and would not be in-keeping with the area.

The council’s response also saiid parking was “insufficient”, as well as highlighting a lack of EV charging points and concerns over privacy for neighbouring properties.

However, the plan has been approved by members of Somerset Council’s Planning Committee – North.
