Investigation into West Hatch death

Avon & Somerset Police are investigating the death of a woman in her sixties at an address in Meare Green, West Hatch near Taunton. The ambulance service was called to the house in the early hours of Sunday 17 December. They found the woman unresponsive. She was pronounced dead and police attended.

The death was being treated as unexpected. However the initial post-mortem results were inconclusive.

Then on Thursday 21 December new information was given to officers. As a result, an investigation is now being led by the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT). They are awaiting the result of a forensic post-mortem examination. Today, Friday 22 December, a man in his sixties, who Police believe was known to the woman, was arrested.

Police say he was arrested on suspicion of murder. This was to enable him to be questioned under caution and with legal protections in place. He remains in Police custody. At this stage Police still do not have cause of death.

Residents will see an increased police presence in the area. This is while forensic teams and specialist officers search the property. They will also be carrying out door to door enquiries.
