Taunton Brewhouse may have one of the more imaginative programs of events in Somerset, but it faces challenges. Not least uncertainty over the grant funding it previously received from Somerset West & Taunton Council.
That is now provided by Somerset Council but the council is facing financial difficulty of its own. If the council is forced to declare bankruptcy, that will mean it will only be able to fund statutory activities. And that does not include the arts.
Obviously there has been some concern around the future funding of the Brewhouse. With that in mind, today the Taunton Theatre Association released this statement: Taunton Theatre Association (TTA), the charity operating Taunton Brewhouse are aware of public concerns around reduction or withdrawal of funding by Somerset Council to TTA and how this will affect the running of the theatre. We would like to reassure our community that our funding from the Council is only a small part of our income and, in the event that funding is withdrawn or drastically reduced, we will continue operating and delivering a high-quality programme for our patrons whilst also seeking replacement funding.
TTA are happy to confirm that all monies from patrons related to future events and performances is kept securely separate and not used for anything other than its intended purpose. Despite the challenging effects of the Covid pandemic, Taunton Brewhouse is doing extremely well. We are delighted that so many people chose to visit us and enjoy the performances and creative opportunities we present. So, please do feel reassured that the Brewhouse is still a place for entertainment, leisure, learning and fun and will continue to be. The Brewhouse team look forward to welcoming patrons, friends and supporters in the future.“
