Ilminster Community Asset?

Ilminster Town Council has been given 6 months to take a look at the old Gooch & Housego building on Cornhill in the town centre. The company will allow the town time to size up the building, see if it can be developed for community use and if feasible, make a bid for it.

Until recently the building was being marketed by Chesters Commercial but it appears to have been taken off the market.

The Mayor, Councillor Phillip Burton explained “It is very early days but there is an exciting prospect of the Town Council leading a project to turn the former Gooch and Housego buildings into a vibrant community facility in the heart of the town.”

The Town Council is now hoping to get the view of the community on what to do next. They are holding a drop-in event at Greenfylde School Hall on 11 July between 4.00pm and 8.00pm.

Anyone with an interest can call in and discuss their thoughts and ideas about the future of the site which occupies a prominent site in the town. In particular the Town Council are hoping to get suggestions as to what could be included in a community building, and some thought on the ways in which the premises could be used.
