Hearings – But not in Somerset’s most affected places

Leveller® readers may recall that last year the Boundary Commission suggested changes to Somerset constituencies. This was part of a national review of all 650 constituencies in the UK. However the proposals for Somerset were radical. In summary:

  • West Somerset to be joined with Tiverton
  • A new constituency of Bridgwater
  • A new constituency of Frome
  • Somerton to be joined with Glastonbury in another completely new constituency
  • Wells hacked about in all directions, adding large bits and losing others.
  • Taunton and Yeovil left alone with minor boundary changes.

All in all these were significant changes. They were consulted on over the course of last summer. There is now a further round of consultation for people to have their say. This is through a series of public hearings. Those wishing to make a spoken representation at a public hearing are strongly encouraged to book a timed slot in advance. To book, visit the dedicated public hearings page on the Boundary Commission website and click on your chosen hearing. You will then be invited to register via the booking platform Eventbrite.

The downside is that all of the hearings in the southwest are outside the area of Somerset most effected by the changes. Hearings will be in Gloucester, Exeter, Bath and Dorchester between 21 March to 1 April. So the only one that is really accessible for most Somerset County Council area folk, is Bath. Which to be honest is not a lot of use if you are coming from Minehead. You can follow the link above to see the dates and book to make an appearance.

On the plus side, you can still make written representation by email or letter. The consultation changes will take place from Tuesday 22 February to Monday 4 April 2022. During this consultation, you will be able to provide your feedback on the proposed new constituencies via our consultation website,, by email or letter.
