Banking fraud in Shepton

A woman from Shepton Mallet has been the victim of a telephone banking fraud.

The woman  a call from someone claiming to be from her bank, who was with a police officer. The “bank official” said they were ringing to notify the victim to advise that her bank card had been stolen and individuals were trying to use it at the bank.

Because it was a poor phone line, the victim – who was in her workplace – asked the caller to call her back on her mobile phone number.

The caller asked for the card details to be confirmed and then requested the PiN code to verify that it was the stolen card that was being used. Police and banks alike advise that this is something no bank will ever do.

The public should be aware that banks

  • will never ask members of the public to give out personal details, such as bank account numbers or PIN numbers over the phone
  • will never send a courier to collect bank cards or money

Police are conducting enquiries into the incident and have identified a couple who were pictured in Bath as of interest to them. They are keen to speak to the man and woman pictured below:
