Somerset street taken back in time for Guy Ritchie’s new Young Sherlock series

A SOMERSET backstreet was transformed for the new Guy Ritchie Young Sherlock series, which hits screens tomorrow (March 4).

Frithfield Lane, in Shepton Mallet, was a location in the new eight-part series which will be shown on Prime Video.

Shepton Mallet Prison was also used in the filming of Ritchie’s new series, along with main locations in Bristol, which doubled as 1870s Oxford for the production.

Ritchie and the Young Sherlock crew were in Somerset for around two weeks in 2024 to film scenes in Shepton, at the Cornhill and Frithfield Lane, with set dressers taking the locations back in time.

Somerset Council’s Screen Somerset team helped facilitate the work, and the authority’s lead member for economic development, planning and assets, Councillor Mike Rigby, said: “This is a huge series that will have a massive global audience, so to have Somerset featuring is fantastic.

“When productions like this come to the county you can see how they bring income to the local economy.

“I’d like to thank Shepton for its patience and understanding during filming, it goes a long way to helping make Somerset an increasingly attractive destination for filmmakers.”

Charlie Lawson, attraction director at Shepton Mallet Prison, added: “For a while, it truly felt as though we’d stepped straight back into the 19th century, the atmosphere, the textures, and the details all worked together to create something incredibly immersive.

“We were so proud of what had been created that we persuaded the crew to leave some of the transformed areas in place, so that our day and night visitors can still enjoy and recognise them now the production has been released.

“Being able to blend history with storytelling in such a tangible way was both tremendous fun and deeply rewarding.”

Young Sherlock stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the young detective, with Donal Finn as Moriarty, and will be available on Prime Video from Wednesday, March 4.
